Summary

Even though there are definitely some failings in what should be key factors of any shoujo series, and Sentai should have spent more time making sure that the box description and subtitles are accurate, the awkward relationships, hit-or-miss characters and numerous spelling errors don't detract from this coming-of-age story to the point of making it no longer entertaining. These 26 episodes maintain a breezy pace that never feels too fast or slow and, aside from a few “wait, what happened to this character” moments, this show hooks you in early and never lets you go. Maybe Maya isn't the easiest character to relate to, but it's hard not to root for her, and her journey as she grows as an actress as well as an adult is full of tense, exciting moments and heartfelt scenes.

There's a scene early in Mitsudomoe Zōryōchū! when Yabe walks into his classroom to find his students burning "cursed" photos on a sacred pyre They're also crying puddles of tears, arguing the finer points of panty shots, and generally generating chaos. "Mm," he nods, satisfied. "Just like always." It's a pretty funny scene, but it's also an implicit acknowledgement of what makes these four episodes inferior to the thirteen that came before: Mitsudomoe has gotten predictable. Rather than invent new comic atrocities, it's content to revisit past successes. There's an athletic festival, a Christmas episode, more of Chiba's doomed girl-harassing techniques, and more opportunities for Shin to deepen his reputation as a panty fetishist. They say familiarity breeds comfort. They also say comfort is comedy's natural enemy. Watching this you can believe it. It's hard to shake the feeling that the show is too busy contentedly basking in its cast's established quirks to properly execute the deadly comic escalations, elaborate contrivances and proliferating perverse misunderstandings that gave season one its down and dirty comic kick. Whether you buy that is up to you, but the fact remains that nothing here matches the first season in either height or consistency of hilarity.

That still leaves a lot of room to be funny, however. The new ways it invents to get Shin caught panting in panties are genuinely hilarious. The punchline to the ripped-swimsuit sketch is as mean-spirited as anything season one devised. And the entire first episode, during which the series indulges in a beautifully pointless sentai parody, is a kick. Much of it is artless—a strange thing to say about a series that made its bones on pee jokes, I know, but there is an art to transgressive humor—and even more of it dishearteningly sanitary. Nevertheless it's rarely anything less than amusing, and occasionally is outright uproarious. And the sanitization makes the gags—lightly recycled and unambitious though they are—easier to stomach for those who were put off by the series' enthusiastic vulgarity. Though it is still vulgar. Nothing with a sixth-grader sporting enormous fake breasts (the better to pass for eighteen and buy porn) could be called anything else.

The performances in the English dub are fine; Luci Christian captures the energetic, irreverent spirit of Mikura, while Andy McAvin clearly has fun in a rare “good guy” turn as Kurokawa and Sasha Paysinger comes close to imitating the original pitch and breathy voice of Asami. Veteran voice actor Vic Mignogna also does a good job with the gay-sounding Mugiyama. Other performances are passable. The problem that purists are likely to have with the dub concerns the English script, which takes significant liberties with the original. Some of the changes involve putting jokes and puns into terms American audiences could appreciate instead of doing a straight translation (which would fall flat), while most others involve infusing the English script with colorful metaphors which are equivalent to what the characters are saying in the subtitles but much more lively than a straight translation and certainly in tune with the tone of the characters and series. This is an approach which ADV has taken on several of their other releases, to varying degrees of success and fan complaints. I do not have a problem with this kind of reinterpretation since it does (mostly) stay true to the intent of the original writing, but I am a “dub” person so mileage may vary. The one place a change was made that I didn't agree with is a scene in episode 10 where Mikura and Asami are talking while walking down a street. Mikura responds to Asami, who had been talking about wanting to be as strong as Mikura, and says “well, you've got a strong heart, and that's a good start” in English, while the subtitles for the same scene read “if you're weak of heart, you won't live long enough to get dinner.” Given Mikura's recurring alley cat motif, and other alley cat references which survive the translation intact, this rewrite seemed inconsistent and unwarranted. One note of interest about the subtitles: they insist on always spelling out Mugiyama's full name even though the original Japanese dialogue clearly uses “Mugi-chan.” While ADV has traditionally not used honorifics in subtitles, anyone who knows Japanese honorifics knows that referring to an adult guy with “-chan” carries special implications which are not reflected in the subtitles.

With its final volume, Innocent Venus regains some of the focus it lost in its dismal middle half, in the process regaining a little of what made the first volume such an easy, compulsive watch. The dreary politics and useless side-plots of the second volume do reach their diluting fingers into the climax, with Toraji and his badly-dressed crew playing a major role and the larger conflicts between classes and nations providing a backdrop, but the uncertain dynamic between Jin, Joe and Sana takes center stage and the shift is most welcome. Even as flat as the three are, watching Jin peeling the urbane veneer off of his underlying psychosis, Sana re-examining her affections, or Joe hearing for the first time what he truly meant to Jin is infinitely more interesting than watching old men wrangling for power. To be sure, the pace is rushed as the series tries to tie up its too-broad plot in a mere twelve episodes, and its reliance on a patchwork of hoary clichés hasn't lessened, but it's studded throughout with pleasantly emotional little bits, and draws to a conclusion that—Drake's tiresomely standard evil plan aside—is surprisingly satisfying. A conclusion that ties up all of the various plot lines and provides loads of visceral action, never flinching away from Jin's transformation or devolving into macho "I will save the girl!" posing. That's certainly more than anyone had a right to expect after the series' saggy middle. And that knife-licking Kiss refugee dies in the bargain. Thank God.

Why me? It was to be the last thought a young prostitute, Balot, would ever have…as a human anyway. Taken in by a devious gambler named Shell, she became a slave to his cruel desires and would have been killed by his hand if not for a private investigator and his self-aware Universal Tool, Oefcoque. Now a cyborg, Balot has not only physical powers, but the ability to disrupt social environments. She chases after Shell, his partner-in-crime Boiled, and faces down a variety of insane villains in this pulse-pounding cyberpunk noir adventure.

The Japanese voice cast still deserves their share of credit, though, being the main source of extras on this disc. Look forward to a full audio commentary (subtitled, of course) for Episode 15, and a 30-minute interview with Yuko Sanpei (Renton) and Kaori Nazuka (Eureka) discussing their characters and the show. Occasionally they mention episodes that haven't shown up on DVD yet, so consider that your spoiler alert—but the segment is still worth watching for their insights and humor.

Even as it winds down from the high intensity of the previous volume, Eureka 7 continues to be an engrossing series. These episodes turn to the inner world of the Gekkostate's crew, particularly Renton and Eureka's states of mind, and pose new challenges that can't be solved by simply piloting the Nirvash. In an underground cavern, history and technology are examined. In a surreal dreamworld, true feelings are discovered. In Eureka 7, a young boy's heart still has plenty of growing up to do.

While little has still been revealed about the Orphans, how Nagi fits into the picture, or the nature of the Headmistress's disposition, this volume does see at least some plot development. A bit more comes out about the nature of the HiME, the role of District 1 in the whole HiME arrangement is clarified some, and it's revealed that there may be another force out there opposing the HiME; one of the characters has an ugly secret about her true nature which implies that someone else is involved, too. And what is the connection between that individual and the “Golden Angel” Alyssa Searrs, the only completely new character introduced in this volume? It's still too early to tell where this is all going, but the end of episode 8 definitely gives the impression that the series may be headed into darker and more serious territory than it's shown so far. The action quotient is lower in this volume than the previous one, but that seems to be just a temporary lull required by the storytelling focus in this volume.

Biohazard: Degeneration sequel to open in 2012 in stereoscopic 3D theaters

The American television network G4TV began streaming a 91-second trailer for Resident Evil: Damnation (Biohazard: Damnation) film on Monday. The game company CAPCOM and the production company Sony Pictures Entertainment is making the project as a sequel to the 3D computer-animated Biohazard: Degeneration (Resident Evil: Degeneration) feature film.

The trailer will be included with the live-action Resident Evil: Afterlife film on 3D Blue-ray Disc and DVD in North America on December 28. The Resident Evil: Degeneration film itself is slated to open in 2012 in theaters with stereoscopic 3D equipment.

The series' 3D CG hasn't improved any—it still resembles a video game—and the 2D animation is frankly embarrassing, so the burden of beefing up the adrenaline falls on the series' less technologically dependent merits. Director Tsuneo Tominaga choreographs the races well enough, combining sweaty close-ups, Hong Kong slo-mo, and whimsical automotive flourishes (following combusting gasses as they burn from piston to tailpipe, for instance) to drive home the frequent reversals of fortune. The series' real force, however, is in its soundtrack. Chimera-izing techno dance beats, rap, and hints of guitar rock in ways that only a work completely divorced from the genres' original contexts can, it's a pulsing monster with an almost Pavlovian effect on the heart rate. Predictably it weakens when tinkering with acoustic emotional tripe, but like the series as a whole, never for long.

By this point it's clear that Funimation's slang-tastic rewrite is here to stay. The cast plays it admirably straight, delivering lines like "it'll take a real man to go up against its curves and straighten them out" without so much as blushing, which makes them just that much funnier. Unfortunately the niggling self-consciousness that accompanies the ribbing further wrecks the dramatic sequences and also opens a distance between show and viewer that isn't flattering to the dialogue that isn't subverted by surfer-dude accents and '90s slang. It's a trade-off, if a generally equitable one.

The next film that Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, Always: Sunset on Third Street, Ballad) will direct after this month's live-action Space Battleship Yamato film is Friends: Mononoke Shima no Naki, a 3D computer anime film set to open in Japan next December.

Yamazaki is basing his screenplay on Naita Aka-Oni, a tear-jerker fairy tale by Hirosuke Hamada (Kuroi Kikori to Shiroi Kikori). However, the film will be an original story. Naki and Gunjō are friends who live on Mononoke Shima, and they cross paths with a human child.

Traipsin' through the dimensions can be tricky business, as Syaoran and his buddies discover when they are separated upon arriving in the world of Shura. Shura is split by a war fought by two godlike leaders over a floating fortress with the power to grant any wish, and the separated comrades inexplicably find themselves on opposite sides of the deadly conflict. Of course, at other times things aren't nearly so dark, nasty or complicated. Such as on Piffle World, where a whimsical sky race will determine who has possession of Sakura's feather. Or in a fictional world where the power of creation is wielded by, of all horrors, Mokona. There's also a kingdom whose leadership issues can be solved by a date with Fay, and a desert road-trip whose only peril is roving gangs of motorcyclists who apparently got lost on their way to the set of Mad Max IV. None of which really prepares Syaoran for a magical book that gives him an unauthorized peek into Kurogane's less than happy childhood.

Preview video streamed; TV series, Pokémon Black & White games launched last month

The official website for the Pokémon anime films has announced that the first Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes! film will open in Japan next summer. The website is already streaming a 20-second announcement video. The Pocket Monsters: Best Wishes! television anime series premiered on September 23; this latest Pokémon anime series ties into Nintendo's Pokémon: Black and Pokémon: White games, which also launched on Japanese Nintendo DS portable game consoles last month. http://www.pokemon-movie.jp/

Sentai Filmworks opted not to dub this one and includes only clean opener and closer for Extras, though they did also include the associated OVA episode. Although all of the content presented in this release is uncensored, some controversy has arisen over whether or not this is truly the most uncensored version of the series, as scene from episodes 9 and 10 both use SD artwork in places where the Japanese DVD releases apparently used regular artwork and more involved nude scenes; for instance, the breast competition between Rin Rin and Shouren happens entirely off camera in this release but was fully detailed in the Japanese release. Controversy has also erupted over the release due to Sentai apparently using the error-riddled subtitles from the original Crunchyroll stream of the series. Regardless of whether the subtitles were borrowed or created in-house – and the lack of any mention of a Subtitle Editor in the English credits suggests the former – they represent one of the worst examples of basic text editing to date on an anime DVD release, as nearly every episode has multiple instances of basic grammar mistakes, stuff that should have been caught on even a casual editing pass.

Accept Koihime†Musō for what it is – a cutesy fan service show – and it can be quite entertaining. It was popular enough to inspire two follow-up twelve episode TV series (both of which are also licensed by Sentai Filmworks) and has a format which can sustain silly situational gags for quite some time to come. You won't find any depth here, but really, what can you expect from a series which casts little girls wearing berets as master strategists?

TV Tokyo co-produces film about war in Kyoto between demon, humans

The animation company Studio Pierrot and the television network TV Tokyo are promoting their Fall 2010 film Onigamiden at Tokyo International Anime Fair this week. The film's story revolves around the war between oni (demons) and humans in the former Japanese capital of Kyoto, 1,200 years ago during the Heian period. The anime adapts a 2004 two-volume novel by the same name from author Takafumi Takada. The official website of the film has already launched. The film will open in Japan on October 9.

Volume twelve of Katsura Hoshino's ongoing tournament shounen manga D.Gray-man represents a major turning point in the Black Order's ongoing war to end all wars against the Millenium Earl's elite soldiers, the Clan of Noah. Previously, their God-blessed Innocence could only be used to defeat Akuma. As powerful as these weapons were, they did not have any particular effect upon humans—even extraordinary ones such as the Noah. Yet the Noah have the power to destroy Innocence. Doesn't quite seem fair, does it? Nevertheless, this, in fact, is the reason why Allen suffered a near disastrous defeat against Tyki Mikk in a previous story arc.

Now they are due for a rematch, and the stakes have never been higher. Tyki is going all out against Allen, now with the new and improved power of the “Crowned Clown,” has a proverbial ace up his sleeve of which even he himself was heretofore unaware. If the Noah have the power to destroy Innocence, it stands to reason that Innocence should have the power to destroy the Noah in turn…right? That would, needless to say, be a very smart supposition. Get ready to see the suave smirk wiped quite suddenly off of the bipolar Tyki's face when Allen whips out a larger than life sword that looks like it was imported direct from Final Fantasy VII.

Unfortunately, some of the changes they've made don't work. It's not clear why they decided to tinker with the show's ragingly screwed up emotional underbelly, but it's as if they've removed all the subtlety from the TV series. They're not properly building these characters this time; the only hint we have that Shinji and his terminally walled-off pops Gendo don't get along is a single flash of that famous picture of toddler Shinji crying next to his luggage, and yet in his very first reunion with his dad, who promptly tells him he's going to pilot the EVA-01, he immediately reacts by crying about it and pitching a fit about how he can't and won't and why me and all that blistering angst that generally took a little longer to get to in the TV series. Shinji was reluctant there, but here he's crying about it right off the bat. Other characters suffer from the same problem; some of the conversations are almost hilariously blunt, with Misato just outright discussing her mountain of personal issues as though she's explaining herself to the audience. They're not coming by all this tortured angst honestly; it feels largely out of context, and for many Evangelion fans, the fact that the entire cast was slowly revealed to be a pack of selfish, emotionally mangled mental patients was half the fun. Here they may as well be wearing tee-shirts that say “Hey guys, I'm pretty screwed up in the head!”. A return to some form of subtlety in the next three films would be nice.

Gundam 00 wastes no time. From its opening scenes of Saji Crossroad learning firsthand the oppressive ways of the new world order, the series charges full tilt ahead. The first episode darts from character to character, updating us on the circumstances of each, before triggering a bloody jailbreak that alters those circumstances permanently. And so it goes in every episode thereafter. Not a one passes in which some character's life doesn't undergo a sea change or a country isn't razed to the ground.

Something is always happening somewhere. If personal and political landscapes aren't reshaping themselves, then Wang Liu Mei is playing both ends against the middle, the creepily androgynous Innovators are plotting their evil way across the background, or A-LAWS slime-buckets are tossing buckets of slime. After years of meandering shonen series, space operas in which nothing or no one really changes and comedies that are content to dance their dippy little jigs in exactly the same place, a series that fills every minute with relevant detail and relentless forward motion is mana from animation heaven. The first episode alone covers more ground than, say, the first eight of Naruto Shippūden. Perhaps that's why it's such compulsive viewing: true to the laws of physics, the narrative is so dense that once it starts moving, its momentum makes it damned hard to stop.

Where they were all badass ciphers with basic personalities and irritating tag lines in season one, by the opening of this set they've seasoned (no pun intended) into flawed but fundamentally sympathetic characters.

Setsuna is softer and more textured, though still a textbook hard case; Sumeragi Noriega is consumed by her own impotence, exposing the core of vulnerability beneath her alcohol-hardened shell of professionalism; and perhaps most shockingly Saji moves front and center, baring the ugly selfishness beneath his peacenik stance, and in the process becoming an honest-to-goodness character. Not all of it is pretty, and not all of it successful—Tieria is still annoying and playing the identical twin card with Lockon is plain cheap—but it is uniformly interesting, and like the series itself the characters never stay in the same place for long, their ever-changing interactions providing enough dramatic lubricant to make the series' dry bits (e.g. its continued flirtations with politically relevant observations on the abuse of power and the place of violence in its rectification and inaction in its propagation) go down easy.

Or perhaps it's simply that it looks good. Certainly looking good has much to do with the sympathy the characters garner. Call me shallow, but it helps that characters like Soma Peries and Sumeragi look good enough to eat, with the extensive male cast serving as a substantial dessert (or vice versa depending on your preferences). Other places slick visuals help: in the creation of believable future settings (which are many, varied, and finely detailed), in capturing body language (which, despite the mild downgrade in animation quality, continues to be expressive), and in the liberal application of unadulterated robo-porn. Particularly the latter. The mechanical designs, all altered subtly in much the same manner as their pilots, are meticulous, suitably fetishized, and frequently pushed into feats of aeronautical violence that are really quite cool. Not an achievement to be sneezed at given the increased (increased; not prevalent) use of shortcuts and downgraded detail levels in the action scenes.

Kenji Kawai's score is not a subtle tool. It is big, spectacular, and even beautiful, but definitely not subtle. Keep an ear out for some eerie vocal work and the superior deployment of insert songs.

Bandai's dub isn't a huge draw. To be sure, it's professionally done (none of that outsourcing to Singapore that tanked a couple of their dubs some years back), but it's also seriously low-tension. You can lay most of that at the door of their subtitle-hugging script with its loving preservation of the original's cheese factor (for added fun, mentally replace any mention of "A-LAWS" with "in-laws"), but the actors must lay claim to a share of the blame as well. Too few of the roles are played with any energy, and when they are—as with Brent Miller's Smirnov—it's the wrong kind (goodbye soldierly formality, hello blustering Patton impersonation). There is good work throughout, for example Cathy Weseluck's hard-edged female commander Mannequin and basically anyone who did well in season one, but not enough of it. Saji's crisis of conscience, Soma's reaction to an inhuman A-LAWS tactic, Marie and Allelujah's reunion—any number of important developments lose crucial impact in the dub.

It immediately becomes obvious what kind of personality quirks each girl is supposed to have. Lumiere is a reserved girl that places heavy emphasis on being ladylike, reminding our audience every few minutes that girls must be elegant. This is objectified by her love for grape juice (underage drinking is a big no-no), wine glasses, and smoke bombs disguised as champagne bottles. Éclair provides the foil as an energetic ham who revels in dressing up in different outfits and embarking on a personal quest to make everyone like her. It's of no surprise then that her weapon of choice would be a tube of lipstick that either gives her superhuman strength when applied, or snakes into a binding ribbon when extended. Whether the characters plan on staying in their predefined niches forever is to be determined, but for the time being, it's a cute little gimmick that lets viewers instantly become familiar with the gals.

If these personality traits weren't made obvious enough by the girls' actions, the voice acting is always there to back it up. Packed with vitality and oomph, every line is delivered with confidence and pizzazz for both the Japanese and English dialogues. Everything would almost be perfect if a minor detail didn't exist—the fact that our two main characters are children. Actually, it's not a minor detail at all. The young age of the girls is referred to every chance possible (which later explains the name of the series), but both dialogue tracks feature voices that are several years too old. The significantly older actresses just don't come across as children and end up sounding silly. Everything else about the language tracks is very well done though. The English script, while different from the original Japanese dialogue, retains the meanings very well and adds its own nuances to make the language transition much more natural.

As far as sensual appeal goes, the best has been saved for last. Backed by the artistic powerhouse Gonzo, the visuals are stunning and fit the studio reputation well. With sickeningly fluid animation, well-blended computer graphics, and careful attention to detail, Kiddy Grade is a feast for the eyes. The corresponding art receives the same treatment, featuring garish colors and bold backgrounds to give the characters their vigor and awkwardly misplaced pep. With an organization so influential as GOTT, and job assignments so important, having the seriousness interrupted with the loud, prominent characters is almost boorish. As with all grrl-power series though, the requisite amount of fanservice must also be thrown in. From Éclair's 16-year old breasts to the bitchy ass-flaunting broads that serve as interoffice rivals, there's just enough fanservice to not be able to take GOTT very seriously at all. The short skirts, hot pants, and leotards hardly do their part in making their characters any more serious, helping to rack up a total of six underage panty flashes in the first episode.

Although the characters do seem out of place in the alleged prestige of their organization, they help make the series the entertaining heap of brainless fun that it is. Loaded with a lively cast and backed up with the slick animation that Gonzo is known for, this series is sure to please fans that are looking for some butt-kicking girl action. Be forewarned though, despite the many good things that can be said to describe the show, it still lacks that substance that drives all good series forward. There really is no discernible reason why, but the first three episodes are flat-out dull, even if they shouldn't be. For those of you who don't already know (and love) him, Arsene Lupin III is a master thief, the grandson of the original gentleman thief Arsene Lupin from the 18th Century French novels. This is a great looking DVD, especially considering the fact that the animation contained within is over twenty years old. Be warned: This is not your typical modern eye-candy anime; it does not have 64 frames per second smoothness or pulse-pounding 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. None the less the remaster is a top-notch job, as a result the colors are bright, the animation is smooth, clear and vibrant, and even the antique mono soundtrack rings out loud and clear every gasp, bonk, and slide-whistle effect of someone falling ala Wiley Coyote.

One of the best things about this release is the music. Every episode has a different ending theme, which means there's plenty of cute music that makes each sequence worth sitting through. Interestingly, Pioneer also provides an English dubbed version of every song. While this is a bit disconcerting at first, the songs are sung well and their voices match the original Japanese ones pretty accurately. The only major thing going against the songs is the complete change of lyrics that each one has undergone. This isn't a huge issue, but it's unclear as to why Pioneer did that instead of attempting to translate the lyrics. The music that plays inside each episode is also nice to listen to, ranging from karaoke interludes sung by Sasami's mother to instrumentals that are played in various scenes.

The one element mediocre about the series is the art and animation. The art is sometimes inconsistent from one frame to another, and the character designs are largely flat and two-dimensional. Perhaps one of the most disturbing aspects of the series is the number of nude shots of Sasami, who's only ten years old. Magical girl or not, this is still creepy and it would have done the series justice to at least blur the definition lines on her body. The animation in the series is decent, though not entirely fluid. There are times that the characters' faces jerk when speaking, which makes it slightly odd to watch. Another issue is the video transfer, which was done in such a manner that the top fringe of the screen includes frame lines. For the most part, however, the problems in the visual aspects of the series aren't noticeable enough to ruin the series.

The Japanese voicing cast did a commendable job with the series, provided the mildly hectic environment that characterized the episodes. There were a few lines that were left untranslated or were translated poorly, but this only occurred a few times in the series. The English dub, however, was extremely painful to listen to, with the exception of Sasami, whose whiny voice fitted her part perfectly. The rest of the characters either had problems stressing the wrong parts of their lines, or just plain couldn't act. The casting for the series didn't help the situation either, as the characters were left with awkward accents and horrid voices that can hardly be tolerated by anyone who saw the Japanese dialogue version first. The English script is translated faithfully for the most part, and while there are discrepancies, Pioneer did a good job keeping the general gist of the original Japanese dialogue.

Overall, this collection of OVAs is a fun-packed volume that will entertain any fan of the series. While it doesn't have the drama and angst that categorizes a few key episodes of the series, it has the light-hearted humor that is sprinkled throughout the various Tenchi Muyo! incarnations. The shallow plotlines and random fanservice provide a brainless way to enjoy the episodes, something which is enjoyable every now and again. For viewers who enjoyed the series, this is something that can't be missed.

Palme's art, in general, does a great job of giving the viewer a sense that the world of Arcana is at times barren and dangerous, yet still very much alive. Stunning blues and moody reds are used to great effect in portraying the feeling of each scene. The animation itself is what you would expect from an animated feature. Palme and friends move smoothly from frame to frame.

Arcana feels like a well-defined, diverse, and alien world. It is close enough to our own world that you can identify with the struggles of the characters, but also populated by creatures that help keep the world fresh. Though, you have to wonder about what the staff might have been thinking in the production process when they created the Bolas. They're giant phalluses. Not kidding. Taller than a man and characterized by their penchant for swarming and enveloping, Bolas are sure to make you squirm at the mere sight of them. Just wait until you see what you can do with one through some creative use of a tourniquet.

All the standard DVDs features are here with the DVD release. There's a 19-minute “Making of” featurette with lots of interview time with director Takashi Nakamura, production sketches, animatics for key scenes, and Japanese promos and trailers. The english dub is up to usual ADV standards. If you like their standard stable of voice actors, then you'll like A Tree of Palme's dub.

A Tree of Palme's biggest shortcoming is the fact that it just tries to do way too much in the time it has. It's not a a bad film by any means. Anyone who still pines for the days when cel animation was king will probably enjoy the two hour investment in this animated film. It just can't fit properly into the time it has. What could have been a beautifully rendered tale of what it is to be human is completely lost underneath layers of unneeded plot and obfuscation. It's a shame that such a beautiful setting had to be crammed into a short amount of time like this. A longer OVA or TV series would have probably served this whole production much better.

Not to forget the steady stream of goofiness designed to delight the eight-year-old boy inside and put a knowing smile on the face of the adult outside. Each victory for GGG is punctuated by the professor jetting around on rocket-powered shoes. Robotic shinobi Volfogg changes into BIG Volfogg every episode (he has a propeller on one arm, which is just so cool). The Goldion Hammer is as big as Gaogaigar itself and looks suspiciously like one of those squeaky joke hammers that Sana from Kodocha is so fond of. Perfect for when Gaogaigar needs to jimmy with his television reception or jerry-rig a carburetor. The Chief gets to try out new, and more outrageous, poses with the release of each new technology, the Major provides muscle-flexing nonsequiturs, and Entohji still has a world-class dandruff problem. Of the preposterous Zonderian enemies, Pizza and Primarda get the most screen time; why it is that Primarda is forever spinning on her toes is never answered, and Pizza...well, his name's Pizza for God's sake.

If the series' content has to run a little just to stay in place, its technical merits don't. They effortlessly maintain exactly the same quality as before. Of course, part of that is because much of it is exactly the same. The same impressive Final Fusion, the same ChoRyuJin and Big Volfogg transformations, the same estimable Hell and Heaven animation, the same green-fairy magical chant to turn Zonders back to humans. The non-repeated bits are of a lower order of animation that often looks cheap, but is usually sufficient to its purpose. The art budget is poured into the mecha. They may be absurd, but the Brave Robots are detailed and incongruously well designed, and Gaogaigar is as old-school cool as ever. Takahiro Kimura's character designs are often caricatures, and in some cases bear little resemblance to real humans, though the greater emphasis on Mikoto offers a rare chance to display Kimura's skill with attractive female designs. Kouhei Tanaka's omnipresent giant robot score is the same—loud and intrusive, a perfect complement to the series' over-the-top nature—as are the shouted opening and quieter, sadder closing.

The ghosts are not the biggest issue, however. It's Takei's misguided focus on them that places the series on the wrong path in the first place. The series is structured in a mostly rigid episodic formula, subscribing to the common manga practice wherein every character trait or relationship quirk is revealed through the course of a mini story. It's the “villain of the week” idea, basically. Manta learns of the power of a Shaman through a run in with a punk at a cemetery. Yoh's commitment to his craft is revealed by confronting a malicious ghost bound to its place of death through emotion. And so on. Some of these stories are interesting in and of themselves, but there is very little binding them together to form a cohesive whole because the characters and narrative they are supposed to enhance really don't have any legs at this point. The only piece of information we know about Yoh at all is that he likes nature. And, hey, go figure, that's kind of what a Shaman is all about. We don't know what he's doing or why he's doing it, and we're not really given a reason to care. Before we can figure out anything about Yoh, Takei unveils a “rival” Shaman, and the magical idea of the “Shaman King”, almost as a substitute for this developmental core. The story takes off before anything has happened, and we are distracted by a barrage of side tales and one-trick ghosts in an effort to build on something that isn't there. Then to top it off, we're told the story through Manta, whose sole purpose seems to be to explain things to the reader in place of Takei letting them develop. He panders to the audience.

These are all faults Takei should have been able to avoid, working as he did under Rurouni Kenshin creator Nobuhiro Watsuki for a number of years. With Kenshin, Watsuki established himself as something of a master of this type of storytelling, constantly finding a way to weave the personalities and intentions of his characters into their actions. When Kenshin took action, the reader always knew why. His personality and history were easily reflected in the main arcs of the manga to magnificent effect. The downtime in Kenshin's action—the scenes and chapters that take place between the battles or the arcs--went a long way to establish an emotional base with the cast that is simply not present in Shaman King. Perhaps the most important thing Takei could have learned from Watsuki was that you have to have something to say before you can say it. Takei, however, writes as if he is always looking forward to what is coming next. He wants to write about ghosts, not people! In the world of Shaman King, Yoh is a vessel for his ephemeral allies, but in reality they up end being a vessel for him, to the benefit of no one. If Takei had taken his protagonist's advice and treated ghosts and people as one and the same, things might have turned out differently. Though perhaps, in a way, he did. The ghosts in Shaman King may not behave like people, but then again, neither do the people in Shaman King. I guess Ren wins in the end.

The series does flirt with melodrama throughout this volume, but it cuts between the endeavors of its varied cast with lightning precision, cutting scenes short before their emotional manipulations can become oppressive, simultaneously limiting melodrama and maximizing tension. Melodrama aside, the only truly damaging charges that can be leveled against this volume are the continued dullness of the male lead (Tate) and a persistent lurking suspicion (fuelled by comments about "remaking the world") that the series may be building up to an Evangelion-style "reset" cop-out.

Like the last volume, this volume has dispensed entirely with first half's light humor. This stretch of episodes is heavy (and occasionally heavy-handed) straight through, as the fragile alliances formed among the HiME during the Searrs Foundation's attack continue to unravel. As do the HiME themselves. The time has come for every sideways glance, cryptic hint, and scrap of back-story seeded in the series' more lighthearted beginnings to pay dividends. The large cast is fleshed out with deep, yet only partially exposed personal histories that simultaneously tantalize and evoke sympathy. As a result, the emotional pain of the entire cast cuts deep, even while Nagi's HiME death match strips them down to their rawest, ugliest emotional cores: Natsuki has succumbed to soul-destroying despair, Nao is consumed by revenge, Shizuru surrenders herself to single-minded devotion, Mikoto drowns her confusion in subordination, and Mai is a mess of conflicting emotions and deep-rooted denial.

Oddly enough, given the strength of the central cast, the series' secret weapon is the supporting cast. As the cover attests, this volume focuses heavily on Natsuki and Shizuru. The English dub, done by Animaze on behalf of Manga Entertainment, also lacks the brilliance of most other production components but should be passable for those who normally tolerate dubs. Weakest in the role of Riquinni, it finds much better casting and performance in the key role of Shiro while placing the other performances somewhere in between. The English script only vaguely follows the Japanese script most of the time and occasionally says something entirely different, though it does not fundamentally alter any crucial aspect of the story.

The regular DVD version offers two on-disc extras: a Japanese theatrical teaser which so misrepresents the movie that it may explain why the movie was not an initial commercial success, and a 4-minute pilot film which features some scenes and characters that never found their way into the final product. The regular disc has been given a 16:9 anamorphic format with options for Japanese 5.1 or Dolby Digital sound, with the English credits following the intact original Japanese credits. Unfortunately the necessary equipment was not available to sample the HD-DVD disc, but its packaging features a different cover picture than the regular DVD case or slipcase. Included with both is an 18-page glossy booklet featuring gorgeous screen shots, movie commentary, a director's interview, and a detailed explanation of artist (and famed-director-to-be) Hideaki Anno's critical role in producing the movie's special visual effects.

It may be overpriced and inefficiently marketed, but that doesn't change the fact that this classic tale of a man's journey to becoming his world's first astronaut stands among the best anime movies ever made. There's a reason why Bandai is using “Honneamise” as the label for their deluxe releases of classic anime works, and this movie shows you why. Hopefully Bandai Visual will eventually come to their senses and release the regular DVD separately and at an economic price so that everyone can have a chance to enjoy such a quality piece of work.

Some other dresses worn by them are 'Yukatabira'(light and loose fitting robes), 'Happi'( a short coat), 'Kamishino'(two piece costume), "Kataginu' etc. "Hakama' is like pants and has 7 folds that signifies 7 human qualities such as courage, humility, justice,chivalry, honesty, loyalty and prestige. During monsoon they wore jackets made up of straw. 'Cording', 'sashes' and 'obi' are used to close different types of jackets.

In case you haven't noticed, most of Japan's Holidays fall on the day of the month that correlates to the number of the month (i.e. Jan. 1st, March 3rd, May 5th....). March 3rd is known as Hinamatsuri, which is literally translated as Small Doll Festival. However, it is more commonly known as Girl's Day!

The day is only celebrated by those parents who have little girls. Boys have their own day on May 5th. As Girl's Day approaches, it is very common for Japanese parents to put up a special display in the main room of their home.

While the display is actually a miniature representation of a marriage ceremony, that is not necessarily its intended purpose. The display is supposed to bestow good fortune, happiness, and good health on the little girls in the home.

Long ago, the display would contain seven steps or tiers, but due to the smaller contemporary homes, the displays only have about three. While the display itself is not designed to bring a good marriage for the little girl, forgetting to take it down does bring something....bad luck! Superstition says that if you do not take the display down by March 4th, the girl will either not get married until she is much older or not at all!

Long ago, the Hinamatsuri dolls were made of either mud or paper. Today, with the modern world, you are able to find much more elaborate, albeit expensive, dolls to display in the home. However, when it comes to good fortune and health for your daughter, I am sure the cost is well worth the benefit!

So, if you haven't already, enjoy Hinamatsuri and celebrate the daughter in your life!

Review:

How do you know you're in an Oh!great manga? When the first page consists of a girl's naked butt right in your face! Yes, folks, the fanservice flies thick and fast in this one, but only for as long as there's a female character involved. Otherwise, it's typical fighting-action fodder, and unfortunately, that seems to be making the series worse. The hyperkinetic visual style may be unlike anything else out there, but it's a waste of creative energy if it's all going to be spent on guys powering up, discussing how ridiculously superhuman their abilties are, and yelling out the names of their attacks. When did Air Gear turn into yet another drawn-out fighting tournament series? More importantly, when are we going to get out of this interminable Behemoth battle arc?

This volume isn't entirely terrible, though. The first few chapters show a fight done right: Onigiri versus Gorgon Shell, where our hero is thrown into peril but overcomes the odds through his own innate skills and a touch of psychological warfare. After that, however, things quickly take a turn for the worse as Ikki and Agito's respective fights turn into some kind of double feature that drags on and on and still isn't over by the end of the volume. That, in itself, is not the problem—anyone who's ever been exposed to anime or manga should be familiar with fights that span multiple volumes or episodes—actually, the real problem is that the Behemoth fight is long for the sake of being long. There is no sense of escalation, no epic struggle; the guys just keep duking it out for over a hundred pages without ever getting anywhere.

If it's not bad enough that the fight drags on without purpose, the scene transitions wreck the flow of the story as well. Managing two battles at once (Ikki's and Agito's) is not an easy task, and jumping haphazardly between them doesn't work at all. A number of quick flashbacks to Agito's past also make the storyline even more fractured than it already is. Amidst all this chaos and lousy plotting, one thing seems to have gone forgotten: Ringo, who supposedly came by to provide some kind of support, but instead ends up standing idly by with no impact on the fight. It's not like she provides very much useful commentary; in the end we're stuck with a side character who's so far off to the side that she might as well have not bothered showing up.

Oh, but there are other very good reasons for characters like Ringo to show up. Air Gear would not be what it is without the T&A factor, and Ringo's ridiculous outfit provides plenty of curvaceous eye candy for those who find such things to their taste. The same can be said for Gorgon Shell, whose battle gear of choice involves a thong and pasties. However, the fanservice goes on hiatus after about the first quarter of the book, to be substituted instead by the trademark action scenes that make the series unique. Visual metaphor comes into play many times here, often in intense detail: Onigiri as a pig, Gorgon Shell as a snake, Ikki as a crow, Akira as a mecha-monster hybrid. Add in the tilted angles, exaggerated sense of perspective, and uncountable speedlines, and the fight scenes are no less than a masterpiece, especially with the full-page spreads. There's just one little problem: with the chaotic scenes and highly detailed style, it can become a nonstop visual assault, with little room to rest the eyes.

The dialogue throughout this volume is decidedly in-your-face, with confrontational language and an assortment of swears. The commentator for the battle is particularly colorful with his choice of words, and this translation sprinkles in some Japanese words ("Ikku yo!" "Sugoi!") to give his speech patterns an idiosyncratic quality—but some may find this more annoying than quirky. Some may also be surprised to find that the dialogue can get quite wordy, as the characters discuss their tragic past or their fighting techniques. Sound effects also play a big role here, transcending the line between text and artwork, and the graffiti-inspired lettering can be so overpowering that any attempt to provide a translation on the page pretty much gets lost in all the action. At least the glossary is more noticeable, covering various pop-cultural references throughout the story.

If there's one thing that's consistent about Air Gear, it's that it continues to provide nonstop eye candy—whether that comes in the form of buxom girls in various stages of undress, or supercharged guys in various stages of battle. But amidst all this mind-blowing action, the story has taken a sharp turn south, wallowing in the mediocrity that we know as the fighting tournament format. It was okay the first few times, when Ikki and friends got into battles that lasted maybe several chapters at the most, but when you start measuring the length of a fight in volumes, that's when things get tricky. Either it's an epic battle that gets crazier and more imaginative with each new move ... or, as it turns out in this volume, it's a fight that's long for the sake of being long, and you only wish it would end already.

Kurama's main attraction, Kurama-dera, is a Buddhist temple located in the wooded slopes above the town. From its main gate in the town's center, the main buildings can be reached in a 30-45 minute climb up the mountain. A cablecar (200 Yen one way) leads halfway up.

Along the ascent to Kurama-dera stands Yuki Jinja, a shrine famous for its Fire Festival (Kurama Hi Matsuri), held annually on October 22. Kurama-dera's main buildings stand on a terrace on the mountain's slope, overlooking the wooded valley.

At an altitude of 1400 meters above sea level, the Senjogahara Marshland covers the plateau between Lake Chuzenji and Yumoto Onsen. It offers some of the best hiking in Nikko National Park.

The Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail follows Yukawa River during most of its course between Yumoto Onsen and Ryuzu Waterfall near the shores of Lake Chuzenji. The hiking trail offers excellent views of the marshland and surrounding mountains and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. Not far from Senjogahara lies Odashirogahara, a smaller but equally idyllic marshland, which is worth a detour or separate visit.

Senjogahara Marshland is particularly beautiful during the autumn leaf season in October, when the marshland's grasses turn into a reddish yellow and the larch trees into a shiny gold. Snow usually falls between December and March, when the hiking trails may not be passable.

1st volume to feature "Issho ni Bath Time" with Carina character in 3D, 2D

Marvelous Entertainment's DVD and Blu-ray Disc releases of the Shukufuku no Campanella television anime series will include "Issho ni Bath Time" extras for 3D televisions. (The extras will also come in a 2D version for regular televisions.) The first volume will ship on September 22 with a "Issho ni Bath Time" extra (in 3D and 2D) for the character Carina (Kimiko Koyama), as well as the first two television episodes, the opening and ending animation footage without credits, and television program commercial footage.

The second DVD/Blu-ray volume will have a "Issho ni Bath Time" extra with Minette (Mai Kadowaki), the third will have one with Chelsea (Asami Imai), the fourth will have one with Agnes (Kaori Mizuhashi), the fifth will have one with Salsa (Ari Yunohara) and Ritos (Mai Goto), and the sixth will have all the characters together.

The television series will premiere in Japan on July 2.

Extra Ecchi Anime of Shukufuku no Campanella For 3D TV

According to Neowing, each of the DVDs & Blu-rays of Shukufuku no Campanella will include a short extra anime "Issho ni Bath Time". The main characters taking a bath will be displayed three dimensionally on 3D TV. Normal 2D versions are also available. The first episode to be released on September 22nd will feature Carina.

Review:

If Aurora Publishing were to give Walkin' Butterfly a subtitle, it would be the following: “Where Professional Modeling Becomes a Competitive Sport.” Although technically a josei manga, the series begins as a textbook example of what the painfully hilarious—and painfully honest—classic parody Even A Monkey Can Draw Manga calls the shounen “tournament” formula, which calls for a protagonist who is then subjected to an indefinite number of struggles of increasingly difficulty. As the name suggests, the most common, stereotypical iteration of this formula involves sports storylines such as basketball (Slam Dunk) or baseball (Kyojin no Hoshi), but an identical narrative structure can be creatively shoehorned into tales about board games (Hikaru no Go!), exorcisms (Bleach), ninjutsu (Naruto), and ballet dancing (Swan), just to name a few. Well, now mangaka Chihiro Tamaki has proven that modeling may be added to this already lengthy list.

For all intents and purposes, Michiko is a shounen manga hero in drag. Like Naruto, Hikaru, and Hanamichi, she is untried, sincere, and perhaps a bit stupid. She adores motorcycles and mechanics and hates girly fashion. She loses her temper easily. She even soliloquizes with over the top, classic shounen declarations along the arduous path to victory: “Now I'm one step closer to that guy!! I'm closing the distance between us!!” All in all, Michiko's personality and skill set makes her seem singularly ill-fitted to her eventual professional calling, but certain inborn advantages (in Michiko's case, her height) suggest that she will soon be able to draw upon deep wells of heretofore untapped talent.

And the plot sure is shaping up into a fun-filled ride that is going to present her with plenty of opportunities to do so. At the beginning of the story, Michiko has, for all intents and purposes, hit a dead end in her life. Her current job is a joke, and she is unable to work up the courage to confess her love to the guy she likes. In short, she needs something—or someone—to light the proverbial fire under her behind. That someone is Mihara, an insufferably supercilious human being who right from the get-go has nothing but contempt for Michiko. He is to her what Sasuke is to Naruto, Rukawa to Hanamichi, Akira to Hikaru, etc.—a worthy rival. (He is also likely to become a love interest since this is a josei manga. This tension between hero and rival can easily be reinterpreted as romance, which explains the prevalence of yaoi fanfiction dedicated to pairing together these two archetypes.) Anyway, the force of his contempt will undoubtedly drive Michiko to greater and ever greater achievement in professional modeling until, at long last, he will acknowledge her as his equal, thereby ending the story.

Obviously, nothing here about the plot or the characters is particularly believable or novel. Instead, it is comfortably formulaic; the pleasure of Walkin' Butterfly lies not so much in the discovery of what happens next but rather in how what happens next happens. Modeling is not the most self-evident of tournament manga subjects, yet Tamaki gives it plenty of quirky texture. And she has clearly done her research. She also has a taste for lowbrow humor, which is nearly a prerequisite for levity in a tournament series. (Many jokes come at Michiko's expense.)

Finally, it all blends seamlessly with a standard josei manga art style, akin to that of Moyoco Anno or Yayoi Ogawa, which tries to embody the genre's intended sassy, edgy spirit on the page. In this, as in everything else, the art is functional and skillfully executed but not especially exceptional. Outlines are sketchy; backgrounds and screentones are minimal. This brand of art serves the story, not the other way around. One notable oddity is an apparent lack of interest in detailed illustration of fashion. Michiko's motorcycle actually gets more attention! Those hoping to learn about haute couture along with Michiko are likely to be disappointed in the long run.

This oversight does not detract unduly from the series, surprisingly. Its subject is modeling, which is an act, not a piece of clothing. Besides, it is not every day that one stumbles across a josei manga that will undoubtedly have both guys and gals alike cheering from the rafters for the protagonist. Run—don't walk—for your copy of Walkin' Butterfly.

Baltimore, MD (May 27, 2010) – Voice actor Patrick Seitz will be a guest at Otakon 2010. This will be his second time attending. Anime fans will recognize him from a long list of shows and video games he has worked on.

Patrick Seitz is a Los Angeles voiceover actor, script adapter and ADR director who has lent his efforts to over 100 anime and video game titles over the last few years—including Monster, the dub of which he feels exceedingly fortunate to have directed.

With most of his resume occupying that odd point where zany, evil, and ethically ambiguous converge, Patrick's roles include Grimmer in, Nekozawa in Ouran, Isshin Kurosaki in Bleach, George in Paradise Kiss, Hazel in Saiyuki Reload Gunlock, Dhaos in Tales of Phantasia, Raul in Ergo Proxy, Koshiro in Koi Kaze, Charles Beams in Eureka Seven, Lee Linho in R.O.D -The TV-, and Luke Valentine in Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate.

On the video game side of the ledger, you can hear him as Ragna the Bloodedge in BlazBlue, Scorpion and Deathstroke in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, Arthas Menethil and Garrosh Hellscream in WoW: Wrath of the Lich King, Dracula in Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, Judgment and The Dracula X Chronicles, Chopin in Eternal Sonata, and Radi Jaeger in Valkyria Chronicles.

Patrick has a BA in Creative Writing and an MFA in Creative Writing & Writing for the Performing Arts, both of which he received at the University of California, Riverside. Before falling down the voiceover rabbit hole, he spent two very Welcome Back, Kotteresque years teaching English at his old high school.

Calling All Otaku: Announcing America's Greatest Otaku and the Tokyopop Tour

The search is on for the most talented fan in the nation!

Los Angeles, CA (May 13, 2010) - This summer, TOKYOPOP will hit the road on a 12,000-mile journey to find America's Greatest Otaku, the person who best exemplifies a truly unique fervor and passion for all things influenced by Japanese pop culture. This nationwide competition will be part of the ambitious "TOKYOPOP Tour," a road show that takes a tour bus to hundreds of thousands of fans, in dozens of cities across the United States-including five fan conventions-to discover and embrace manga and anime fan culture around the nation.

The TOKYOPOP Tour kicks off in July at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, CA, and will run through Chicago Comic-Con at the end of August. The culminating event will be a multi-episode reality show, premiering in the fall on a major online video site, which will reveal to the nation who will be crowned America's Greatest Otaku!

Stu Levy, Executive Producer of the America's Greatest Otaku reality show, as well as TOKYOPOP's founder, says, "Japanese pop culture has influenced many of us Americans in a number of ways. The goal of this show is to prove to the world that American otaku are just as talented - if not more - than their counterparts worldwide."

Joining Levy on the maiden voyage of the TOKYOPOP Tour bus will be his apprentices in the search for America's Greatest Otaku: the "Otaku Six". These six college students-an energetic and outgoing group of manga and anime devotees-were selected from nearly one hundred candidates from thirty-one states and seven countries, after a lengthy and arduous audition process. In addition to reaching out to fans nationwide and seeking out each city's Greatest Otaku, the Otaku Six will also be featured on the show itself.

Filming the day-to-day events for broadcast will be TOKYOPOP associate producer Daisuke "Dice" Kinouchi, who anticipates a thrilling ride. "I can't wait to experience the unpredictability of the road on this summer-long show. I just hope no one accidentally whacks me with a yaoi paddle while I'm lugging around my camera filming the show."

Review:

For fans of the epic animated classic "Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind," reading Miyazaki's manga on which the film is based is akin to finding three long-lost books of the Bible. Written and drawn by the master himself intermittently from 1982 to 1994, the events of the anime version comprise only the first quarter of the manga's story. Nausicaä's prophecy-fulfilling rescue of the Valley of Wind only sets the stage for a much grander tale that takes the heroine to new lands and introduces dozens of new characters. Miyazaki creates a literary fantasy world that is far more intricate and believable than any of his anime creations (themselves awesome accomplishments,) and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the works of Tolstoy and Tolkien as one of the most fully realized pieces of fiction in history.

It is an amazingly complex story, yet remarkably easy to follow. In lesser hands the manga would soon crumble under its own weight but Miyazaki balances half-a-dozen plotlines with effortless grace, constantly interweaving the threads of the tale into a wondrous epic. Nausicaä criss-crosses the globe, meeting many friends and foes along the way, some of whom later end up with Lord YUPA's and Prince Asbel's own traveling company. Meanwhile Princess Kushana and her aide-de-camp Kurotowa desperately try to wage war against an external foe while orchestrating a coup d'etat against her father, the king of Torumekia. We are introduced to an entire nation of people absent from the anime, the Dorok. They are not the aggressors in the war with Torumekia but their condemnable battle tactics make them no better than their attackers. The author intentionally blurs the lines between good and evil, and in the end there are no real villains--a theme he would later revisit in Princess Mononoke. Nausicaä leads a Torumekian army into battle against Dorok High Priest Charuka in volume two, but by volume three Nausicaä is his close friend and confidant. Even the fearsome God Warrior is given an ambiguous nature when, unlike the anime, he fully revives and thinks Nausicaä is his mother.

No less impressive than the multilayered plot is the expansive world-building. The film drops only vague hints about the Seven Days of Fire, which destroyed our modern civilization thousands of years before. The manga illuminates not only what led to the tragedy but an equally sinister plot set in motion at the same time to counteract the disaster at a terrible cost. The histories and customs of Dorok, Torumekia, and the Valley of Wind as well as many other nations and cultures are fully fleshed out as well. It's all seamlessly woven throughout the fabric of the story, and like any Miyazaki story it is profound and enchanting. One feels he is getting not merely a fictional history lesson but a grand tour of an exciting fantasy universe.

There are many characters here that are unique to the manga, and some like Charuka and the telepathic child prodigy Chikuku are so wonderful one wishes they had been in the anime. But more interesting is the depth Miyazaki adds to the familiar faces of the movie. Instead of a revenge-crazed dictator, the manga's Princess Kushana is a determined commander who, while not afraid to get her hands bloody, is ultimately most concerned about her people's well-being; she is without a doubt the template for Princess Mononoke's Lady Eboshi. The conniving, self-centered Kurotowa not only comes to respect Nausicaä and Kushana, but he is eventually prepared to sacrifice his life for their safety. Even the dark-haired girl who switches clothes with Nausicaä in the movie is a fully-developed character here; her name is Ketcha, and she is swept up in Nausicaä's adventures like so many others.

Set amidst all the political intrigue and multifaceted cast is Miyazaki's favorite theme of ecological awareness. Unlike the film the manga addresses the complexities of humanity coexisting with his natural environment. It is much easier said than done, and sometimes the best intentions can lead to disaster; as Nausicaä finds out near the end of her quest, her own plan to save the planet may in fact destroy it. There is no all's-well-that-ends-well finale, and Nausicaä and her friends must continue to strive for a balance between man and nature--another idea that would be revisited in Princess Mononoke.

Miyazaki is of course a tremendous artist, and it is a rare treat to see his manga work, which is even more personal than his anime productions. There is a lot of care put into each individual drawing, as evidenced by the exhaustive line-shading technique used in every panel. The aircraft are, of course, expertly depicted. It must be said though that Miyazaki is more adept at film production, and his panel work is not as polished as that of manga-ka like Kia Asamiya or Kenichi Sonada. The page layouts are pretty straightforward and tame, almost more like an American comic book than a manga. His artwork, beautiful as it may be, is a little too busy for the comics medium, and often his panels are overly-crowded with word balloons. But in light of the book's many other incredible accomplishments, to carp seems trivial.

The animated version of "Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind" is unquestionably an amazing piece of work, but it is only the tip of the iceberg. I dare say the manga is Hayao Miyazaki's finest work ever--animated, printed, or otherwise--and that's saying a lot. Manga allows for a depth of plot and character unattainable in the cinematic medium, and Miyazaki uses it to its fullest potential. It is also the most adventuresome and the most heartfelt of his stories, with action grander than Princess Mononoke's and more emotion than Spirited Away. Simply put, everyone should read this book.

FLOW Blasts into San Jose for FanimeCon 2010

The "five-piece" band will make a splash in the San Jose Civic Auditorium on Friday, May 28th, as part of FanimeCon's 2010 MusicFest. (Please see schedule for performance start time.) Anime Central to Present World Premiere of "Yoshiki History through X Japan"

On the journey to gaining confidence with women, one of the most important skills to master is the art of the tease. One of the main problems that many men have with women is that they come from a very straight-forward and inexpressive way of interacting, leading to dull interactions. Consider this "typical" conversation that many women go through when meeting new men:

John: What do you do for a living?
Jamy: I'm a lawyer.
John: Cool. So...what do you do for fun?
Jamy: I don't know. Movies?
John: I love going to the theater. What's your favorite movie?
(etc. etc.)

Obviously, this conversation is a little exaggerated...however, the next time you find yourself in a party or sociable bar, try listening to new people meeting...and you will hear variants of this all night long.

Now, some people may wonder what is wrong with this. After all, they are getting to know each other, right? Well...while it is true that facts will be exchanged here, the interaction is lifeless. Even with initial physical attraction, these kind of conversations will leave most women flat.

To some extent, you do need to get to know people as you talk to them. At the same time, you then need to balance this by flirting with women in a more interesting and exciting way while you build the connection. One of the simplest ways to do this is by learning how to tease effectively.

In a nutshell, teasing is playful bantering and joking directed at another person. Look for something that girl says or does that opens her to some friendly ribbing, and then take advantage. Think of how your close friends or teammates may poke fun at you in an affectionate way...and convey that same energy to the girl.

Also, note that you can tease physically. When she says something silly or over the top, give her a light tap on the shoulder, or give her a playful push back. Remember to use very little force...the point is to do a little physical flirting without offending or hurting anyone.

If something you say or do ever causes a girl to suddenly get uncomfortable and pull back, or she tells you in a serious tone that what you did bothered or offended her in some way, pay attention. The idea is to have fun, not creep girls out, and if you do that by accident...apologize and back off. In the future, be more careful in how you go about it.

A 2-day pass for unlimited bus rides between Nikko and Senjogahara (as far as Sanbonmatsu bus stop) is available for 2650 yen at Tobu Nikko Station, while a 2-day pass for unlimited bus rides between Nikko and Yumoto Onsen is available for 3000 yen.

For walking the entire Senjogahara Plateau Nature Trail, get off at either Yumoto Onsen or Ryuzu no taki bus stop. The hiking trails can also be joined from Akanuma bus stop, while Sanbonmatsu bus stop offers a small observation deck with views over the marshland, but no access to the hiking trails.

Note that during the autumn leaf season in October, traffic between central Nikko and Senjogahara can be very heavy, and buses can incur heavy delays, especially on weekends. If possible, try to visit during the week and not on weekends.
